I live in Poughkeepsie, NY with my husband Robin, daughter Jessica, and our two dogs Kit and Snickers. We rescued Kit in Feb. 2007 from Beagles Etc in Windsor CT. A few weeks after we adopted Kit we were in a local pet store shopping for some squeaky toys. We were approached by a woman who was asking us about Kit. We told her about how fast she was and how she loved toys and balls. We told her that we wanted to get Kit involved with something to redirect her excessive energy and to bond with Jessica. She asked if we knew what flyball was. We had never heard of it. She told us her name was Kathy and that she was the captain for local flyball team. She explained what flyball was and asked us to come watch practice the next week. We figured it could not hurt and went. When we watched the team practice it looked like a fun thing to try. We were not sure if Kit would be any good at it. Kathy said Kit would be great and showed Jessica what to do. We have been hooked ever since! We travel with the team monthly to tournaments in PA, MA, NH & DE. Originally Jessica and I were training Kit. Kathy thought that it was best to only have one handler for her. Jessica wanted to be the one. So Jessica runs Kit. There aren't that many teams that would let a 6 year old train and run a dog. I feel lucky to have found such a wonderful team and I have made some great friends. Watching Jessica and my teammates run their dogs looked like fun, so I decided that I wanted to get another dog. We knew that we wanted save another dog like we did with Kit. In Feb 2010 we adopted Snickers a 7 month old puppy from Blue Dog Rescue in Colchester, CT. She is a very sweet and funny mutt. No matter where we take her people always stop to say Hi. She loves kids and we are hoping to train her to become a therapy dog like her sister Kit. Kit goes to our local library & schools to have kids read to her. Kit loves to show the kids all her tricks she can do. Snickers has started to run the jumps which is the first step in training a new dog in flyball. Kit & Snickers are now learning to do agility. It has helped Snickers with her confidence and we are having a great time! Aside from training Snickers
I will continue to work on the team's website, box loading and helping
out the team in whatever way I can. |
