Flyball

What Is Flyball?
Flyball is a team sport for dogs that was invented in California in the late 1970’s.
It is a relay race with 4 dogs on each team.
The Course
Starting line with drag strip starting lights,
4 hurdles spaced 10 feet apart and;
A box 15 feet from the last hurdle.

The Players
4 dogs (up to 2 spare dogs)
4 handlers
1 box loader
1 linesman
1 ball “shagger”
The Game
The dog jumps the hurdles, triggers the box, and catches the ball.
With a swimmers turn, he pushes off the box and returns over the 4 hurdles.
As he crosses the start/finish line, the next dog begins his run.
The first team to have all 4 dogs run without errors wins the heat.
Best 3 out of 5 heats wins the race.
Overall winner is decided by elimination or round robin format.
Other Facts
Hurdle height is 4” lower than the shoulder measurement of the smallest dog on the team (minium 8” and maximum 16”).
The majority of teams run 18-23 second runs.
The world record is 16.06 seconds and is held by a team from Ontario.
Awards
Dogs earn titles with the accumulation of points.
Points are earned by completing clean runs under an allotted time.
Teams placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, take home rosettes, trophies or medals at the end of a tournament.
