AUSSIE

It is with a great deal of love and respect that we honor the memory of Aussie. On day one, the beginning of starting the team, Aussie showed up with Greg. Not sure what to expect, the two of them embraced the sport of Flyball with enthusiasm. That first summer, practice would occasionally be interrupted by Aussie deciding that he’d had about enough of this nonsense, and wouldn’t we all like a little break! The three or so people at practice would get a rest, while Aussie sauntered around, seemingly in his own world, until he’d had enough of sniffing the trees and returned to have another go at jumping hurdles. He wasn’t being disobedient, he was just taking his time at returning to Greg. Aussie knew, after all, that Flyball is a fun sport, and, at times, it seemed as if he was there to remind us about the fun part. He was a quick study, and quickly learned how to play the game. When running in a tournament, he always sized up his opponent, and somehow managed to run just fast enough to win. No matter how many times his runs were clocked on the practice field, we learned early on that his true speed would only be demonstrated in the lane. For in a race, Aussie wanted to win. On a team of intense Border Collies, Aussie reminded all of us that Flyball is, after all, a game, and should be played in that spirit. Win or lose, he always managed to run with a sense of humor, and a willingness to stop in a race and have a visit with a friend, especially if the friend was the Line Judge. We will carry him always in that special place in our hearts reserved for the most loved among us.
