Our team Greyhound, Mikies Fool “Josie”,
became NAFA's number one Greyhound at Wired for Sound June 14, posting her
best split time ever of 4.76 seconds and eclipsing those before her in
career points. The Nashville event marked her
tenth tournament weekend since January.
While
Jos has lived in a flyball home for nearly six years, her success at the
game is relatively newfound. She ran a couple of tournaments in
2007, but it wasn’t until 2008 that she showed she could be a solid contributor. Jos
is far from a technician: she has a slower send than return, does a
one-footed tap on the pedal, grabs from the right, turns to the left |
|
and accelerates
like there’s no tomorrow for her return. She decelerates in the
runback area with her tail rotating clockwise.
She seems to have as much fun
as any other dog on the floor, but she's a lot quieter about it. She
may have to be woken up in her crate to ready her for racing at the end of
the second day. Her handler jokes that he believes she was born with
a limited number of successful runs. Now that she understands the
game, he won't waste them on full-send warm-ups -- runbacks only for this
old gal.
Jos's competition schedule
is about to lighten up, but you can count
on seeing her in the lanes until she decides she's done. She's very
good at sending not-so-subtle hints when she has lost interest.
Until that time, she will pursue a new goal of being the first Greyhound
to earn an FMX.
Whether that happens or not, her handler will continue to enjoy her |
|
for the excellent companion she is,
with each day bringing more depth,
texture and richness
to her character.

Jos is a rescue that handler Dana Hanson adopted from Hollydogs Greyhound
Adoption while he was living in South Florida. She celebrated
her eighth birthday May 21. |
