Runaway Red Rooster

Rooster is a shelter dog that made his way to our club through rescue in 2005.  At five months old, he seemed like a flyball natural, running the lane without gates on his second attempt.   He did have some issues with wanting to play by the rules.  After allowing six months of maturing, we brought him back out for training and were

rewarded for our patience.  Roo went to his first tournament in August 2006.  We were not sure what to expect.  He ran faster and more reliably than we had ever hoped, aside from leaving the ring a few times after completing his run. It also quickly was obvious that he just couldn't sit there and wait for his turn to run, but he proved to be an excellent start dog, putting up a 4.6 second run.  Over the next year, 4.6 - 4.9 seconds became a dependable time.  He was very consistent in the start position and even posted a couple of perfect starts.  Unfortunately, he developed some issues that made a clean run less reliable.  Rooster decided that it was either more fun or just a lot easier to not take all the jumps.  He also developed problems passing and would choose to cut lane rather than share space.  After six months of working on these issues with little improvement, we decided to take a short break from competition and went back to boot camp.

In January 2008 Rooster returned to the ring and appeared invincible running at anchor.  He also put up his fastest time of 4.372 seconds in a singles run over 8-inch jumps.  Since then he has begun to reclaim his preferred position in start but is still picky about

which dogs he will pass reliably.

Rooster is a blast to run and a great companion.  He loves  nothing better than to sleep in your lap all day but also craves the competition of the ring.  He becomes visibly and audibly mad when he sees the competition is ahead and kicks into high gear.  We continue to train on his issues but are overjoyed to have him back in the ring.
