Huey has the longest career of the dogs in our
current lineup, having begun his flyball training in January 2002 with Waverunners
in Hollywood, Florida. He was not a natural. True, his breed is
built for speed and Whippets will chase anything that moves, but put a
stopped ball in a flyball box and suddenly, "What's my motivation?"
And so his teammates made sure that a ball WAS in motion until the
last possible second every time |

Huey went to the box. He learned to enjoy the game and to
make a lot of noise waiting his turn in the lane.
Huey ran anchor position first. He
looked tiny and fragile, and the team didn't want him wedged
between two of its bigger dogs. He passed into
|
|
Dylan, a gentle, 10-year old Viszla that
he learned to trust completely. In his early
tournaments, Huey bobbled the ball quite a bit. Then we
discovered squishy baseballs that are only slightly smaller than
tennis balls, and Huey seemed to catch better. Still,
it is unusual for him to run an entire |
|
tournament bobble-free, and he can be
affected a great deal by adjustments to our box. What Huey
does well is run in whatever position he is needed, and he can be
counted on for two full days of racing. His times generally
are in the low to mid 5's, although he has posted high 4's in his
career.

 Huey
is small for a male Whippet and has the distinction of being the
only Whippet in
U-FLI measured to jump 10 inches. What he lacks in stature
he makes up for in heart. He is, as one club member says, a
game little guy. He is excited about all forms of
competition and usually finishes with a big, ear-to-ear grin.
While he is most accomplished at flyball, Huey has earned titles
in obedience and oval track racing and enjoys lure coursing, as
well. |
